Yanni in his beginning years was a kid who started giving our performances for his family members and friends, and a few recitals. He also couldn't read a single note of music, at all. What he could do very well, was swim. Yanni was a competitive swimmer in his native Greece, setting the 50 meter freestyle record during his formative years. When he was 18 he chose to pursue college, by attending an American institution. He chose the University of Minnesota, and there he mat a man named charlie Adams, who was a drummer at the time for a group named Chameleon. Yanni joined them with little coaxing and began his musical path. The band gained some notoriety, particularly in the Midwestern and great lakes states. Of course, some of the most ardent supporters of the band were the underground music scenes of Wisconsin and Yanni's state of residence during college, Minnesota. He initially went into Psychology and got his Bachelors degree in that, but chose to abandon that in favor of music. After that, Yanni moved to California to pursue movie soundtrack work. In 1987 he put together a group, with John Tesh, Charlie Adams. The were formed around the idea of promoting Yanni's first 3 early instrumental albums, including Keys to Imagination, and Chameleon days.
Since then, Yanni has played in 35 countries for crowds in excess of 20 million and more.35 gold and platinum albums are under his belt globally, with enormous sales of over 20 million pieces in many spots. His popularity continues onward and he crosses the boundaries of preferred listening on many levels. Listed as the highest and most well known name in the area of raising money for public broadcasting, Yanni continues to do so. Having raised more money than anyone else for awareness, his name is solidified in music and the hearts of many. |
